Art History -Newlyn & St Ives
Our one day Art History courses provide a wonderful overview of art created in West Cornwall from the 1880’s through to the present day. Penlee House Gallery, Tate St Ives and Newlyn Gallery have commissioned new lectures specifically for these Art History Days run by Newlyn School of Art. Lecturers from the three galleries present their talks alongside illustrative slide presentations.
The day begins with a wonderful slide lecture and guided tour from Katherine Ashton, Education Officer at Penlee House Gallery to explore art from Newlyn and Lamorna from the 1880’s to the 1920’s. This is followed by an early lunch at Newlyn Gallery Cafe (from £4.50) and then a slide presentation and talk provided by Tate St Ives given by Janet Axten on Modernism in west Cornwall (held at Newlyn Gallery) and finally students will receive a visual overview of some of the award winning contemporary art which is being made in the area today given by well known artist and lecturer Marion Taylor (held at Newlyn Gallery).
This course is held in two separate locations; Penlee House Gallery and Museum and Newlyn Gallery. Transport is not provided but it is a walkable distance of around 3/4 of a mile between the venues. Alternatively students often share a lift with others wh
Please meet outside Penlee House Gallery and Museum at 9.55am. Lunch can be purchased at Newlyn Gallery cafe and the two later lectures will be held at Newlyn Gallery. Please be seated in the small lower gallery picture room at Newlyn Gallery for the second lecture by 1pm.
We would advise that this course is suitable for those of 16 years of age and upwards. We put these guidelines in place for the safety, comfort and enjoyment of all our students.
Entry to the galleries is included in the fee.
Newlyn Gallery will be offering lunch in the gallery cafe to those attending this course with prices starting at around £4.50 per person.
