St Michael's Mount Art Day
Newlyn School of Art is teaming up with St Michael's Mount to provide one day art courses in the dramatic surroundings of the gardens and harbour of the iconic island.
Using waterbased paints and a range of drawing materials over the course of the day renowned landscape painter Paul Wadsworth will encourage students to free up their painting practice whilst exploring the wonderful surroundings of St Michael's Mount.
Students will be guided on compositional and colour notes taken in the field through drawings and painting studies with advice on how students might take the studies they have made home and create a finished painting after the course. With lots of one to one tuition over the day Paul will encourage free and broader use of materials concentrating on a range of subjects on the Mount.
St Michael’s Mount has been depicted many times by artists through the centuries perhaps none more famous than J M W Turner who visited Penwith on a number of occasions during the 1820’s and 1830’s recording the magical island in Mount’s Bay in several watercolours of the time. A major oil painting of 1834 by Turner, housed in the V & A collection in London, depicts St Michael’s Mount from a low view point on the water’s edge with the island towering above with dramatic light on the island breaking through the clouds while small fishing vessels lie strewn around on the beach foreground at low tide.
Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to create your own depiction of St Michael’s Mount under the expert tuition of one of Cornwall’s renowned artists.
