THE MODERN PORTRAIT
The portrait continues to be an enduring and powerful subject for artists to this day. This fascinating three day course will help students to develop their own response to portraiture with the choice of using a variety of source material from historical figures, popular culture, friends and family to self-portraits or the imagination. A variety of materials and processes will be used during the course from drawing and painting through to collage and the use of a polaroid camera. Jesse Leroy Smith has been working with the portrait throughout his career with painting, photography, printmaking and film and he is a passionate advocate of the power of portraiture in a contemporary context.
The course will include looking at a number of modern and contemporary artists who have worked with the portrait from Van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud to David Hockney, Luc Tuymans, Jenny Saville and Gillian Wearing among others.
With lots of hands-on work and a constant flow of inspiring exercises and examples of related artists’ work; this exciting course will give students an unforgettable immersion into the world of the modern portrait.
