ABSTRACTING THE COAST PATH

ABSTRACTING THE COAST PATH

This exciting three-day course shows you how to create abstract drawings, collages and paintings from direct engagement with the landscape.

A wonderfully nourishing immersion into abstracting the landscape from the plants at your feet right through to the experience of exploring the wider coastline around West Cornwall.

Kitty will share her strategies for collecting visual information and materials from nature and then support you to make a wide range of experimental, abstract and colourful works of different kinds in the studio. The course takes participants on walking sessions on the coastline gathering information and making studies from nature and the landscape.

Exercises include initially working with abstracting and reductive drawing techniques to respond to natural forms in a new way, simplifying, abstracting and loosening your approach and giving you the confidence to continue working from nature.

You will then use found and simple natural materials to make your own drawing tools and experiment with these alongside chalk, charcoal, paint and brushes to explore the marks each tool can make.

You will experiment with scale and learn how to edit, arrange and select objects, drawings and colour studies and how to develop them further into paintings.

Inspired by your observations in nature and objects you have collected, you will move from making linear marks to solid abstract shapes using paint and brushes.

Kitty will explore colour theory and help students to tackle mixing colours and make decisions on your personal colour palette.

A fantastic opportunity to explore different ways of seeing and generating drawings, collages and paintings through engaging with the extrordinary beauty of the Cornish coast path.
