The online Experimental Landscape course with artist Anthony Garratt uses many different demonstrated exercises and a host of materials and tools with innovative painting and drawing techinques to help you to energise and broaden your landscape painting practice.
The course is pre-recorded so that you can take your time to really absorb the wealth of advice, practical exercises and demonstrations throughout the course. We would advise spending at least around 3-4 days working your way through the course. The artist suggests that it would be good to create several studies from each exercise to fully explore the learning and new techinques and approaches. You have unlimited access to the course for 12 months.

Some people may choose to go out into their surrounding landscape to do the exercises but if not then the ten or more looped films of the Cornish landscape, complete with the sights and sounds of the sea, will be a fantastic resource to work with from the comfort of your own studio/home. The exercises are demonstrated wonderfully by artist Anthony Garratt with lots of hints and tips and then the directions for what you can then do are written on the screen for you in text which you can pause to really take in the advice. It is a jam packed course with lots of exercises for you to do and a wealth of advice and instruction from one of the UK's leading coastal painters.
Chapters within the course include:
Sennen Beach on location - sky, sea and sand. Working on two painting studies at the same time to keep works fresh with clean colours and not overworked, composition, layering of information and colour, applying paint with a wide range of materials and tools to create a wide and lively range of marks.
Sennen Beach continued back in the studio. Editing through looking at focal points in works, contrasts of busy and quieter areas, deleting areas of a work, relationships between marks and between colours in different areas of a painting.
Pendeen Watch on location - cliffs, tin mines and lighthouse. Line drawing exercises, memory drawings, tonal drawing exercises, textural rock studies with use of soil, oil bar and acrylics applied with a squeegee, spray paint, masking with tape, water mixable oil paint.
Pendeen Watch continued back in the studio. Using more considered approaches and marks in your painting on top of more gestural and broad marks made on location. Using 'flow improver medium' to create fluid marks that keep their colour saturation, using cropping windows to consider compostions for new works.

Tremenheere Sculpture Garden on location. Working on two paintings at once applying a warm ground to one work and a cool one to the other. Quick exploratory sketches to build up a language of marks to use in your paintings. Pre-mixing colours to enable you to create a series of paintings more easily.
Tremenheere Sculpture Garden back in the studio. Considering your paintings upon coming back into the studio. Balance, atmosphere and more controlled working. Rehersing marks on seperate paper. Using colours mixed on location in the studio. Scoring into wet paint among other techiniques.
Hayle Estury on location - industry and nature. Emphasising the contrast between the fluid nature of the estury and the hard industrial shapes of the buildings. Research on it's history before you get there. Adding raw materials such as iron filings and PVA rusted with saline solution.
Hayle Estury back in the studio. This work is created in real time to and so you can see all of the stages the work goes through. it is very useful to see the painting being pulled into it's finished form through different stages. Materials used for the work include acrylic paints, spray paint (brush can be used instead to make similar marks if you prefer), chalk and masking out of areas with tape to create stencils.

Materials used on the course.
The following materials list is not necessarily all required to expereince the course but is the full extent of meterials demostrated on the course. You can get a lot from the course with just a selection of the below materials. Heavy weight cartridge paper or similar at 250-300 gsm, mountcard, MDF or plywood board at 3-4mm thick, white gesso for priming supports. Pencils, graphite sticks, compressed charcoal, acrylic paints, waterbased acrylic spray paints (or alternatively use dilute acrylic paint or inks for a similar effect). Spray paints used were Molotow One4All and refillable YouCan by Jaquard. Water mixable oil paints, oil bars, flow improver acrylic medium (Golden Ltd), water pots. A wide range of flat and round brushes from small fine to decorators brushes. Shower squeegee, palette knife, old scissors, craft knife, old steel ruler or a piece of board for scoring against, rags and kitchen towel. Masking tape (Anthony used ProDec from a DIY store), home made cropping windows made from card. PVA glue, iron filings (fine grade available from First4magnets). Salt solution in a spray bottle at 50:50 salt to water ratio. When on location Ant took out an extra empty water bottle for waste painting water (NB take this home; don't empty into the landscape or waterways. Make sure you do not leave any materials or litter on site. If using spray paint always use a respirator facemask or work outside in a well ventilated space.
NB. IF YOU DON'T HAVE ALL OF THE ABOVE MATERIALS YOU CAN STILL GET A LOT OUT OF THE COURSE.
