On this course you will explore some of the wildest and ancient parts of West Cornwall, and be shown by artist Kate Walters how to absorb the visual poetry of place and respond with drawings and notes. You will develop these studies and observations into monotypes back in the studio at Newlyn School of Art with Kate, learning how to get the best from various monotype techniques. You will be shown images of work by a range of landscape artists who like to respond to wild places and landscape poetry created by indigenous peoples.
This course will help partcipants to exploit the versatile and experimental possibilities of monotype using positive and negative processes (adding and subtracting) and working with line and/or areas of colour/tone. Most fundamentally you'll have one or more smooth surfaces such as sealed card or pvc on which you either paint an image - then pressing a piece of paper onto it, make a one-off print (which can be worked into afterwards) or, you'll ink up a sealed flat surface with ink using a roller, then drop a piece of paper onto it, before drawing using linear marks to create another one-off image. You will be able to combine techniques and work across all the ways of working with monotype. It is portable and we will take small pieces of sealed card with us into the landscape on our walks...
This course focusses on the exciting possibilities of monoprinting without a press to enable students to continue with what they have learnt after the course.
Kate finds great inspiration for her work in wild places where the human psyche has not imposed itself too much. She loves to visit the Northern and Western Isles of Scotland to walk, write, and draw. Her recent book 'Iona Notebooks' has sold out and a new edition, 'Shetland Notebooks', is in preparation.
This course involves a considerable amount of walking, with natural breaks to respond creatively to the beauty of the landscape through drawing and writing and as such requires a reasonable level of fitness. Bring walking boots and for those who prefer to use them you may bring walking poles and a small back pack to carry a few materials and a sketchbook provided by the art school. All art/studio materials will be provided.
Kate Walters also teaches on our one year Mentoring course.
