PATRICK HERON COURSE
An unmissable opportunity for the many among us who have been inspired by Patrick Heron's paintings. A wonderful two days of a hands-on course exploring Heron's painting with particular reference to colour and space.
Heron continually developed his abstract, painterly language throughout his life. His one consistent strategy was to explore the use and value of colour (his great inspiration was Henri Matisse) and his expansive approach to mark making. He developed and expanded pure abstraction in this country and beyond. In the later part of his life he would regularly work at home in a smaller, more intimate, white washed studio in which he would "play" with brightly coloured gouaches on dry and dampened paper; each work would rework a broad spectrum of mark making strategies into an infinite variety of compositions and high key colour hues, often painting directly with the tube of paint. It is this process of painting spontaneously in gouache with water on paper that we will be deploying at the Newlyn School throughout this workshop in order to inhabit the playful spirit of Patrick Heron's approach to painting.
Aesthetics played a huge role in Heron's painting processes and so It will be useful for us to discuss, research and explore some basic aesthetic approaches which will give us the opportunity to produce similarly brightly coloured energetic and beautiful paintings in the spirit of Patrick Heron. We will look at high key colour combinations, space and colour, expanded mark-making techniques and compositional devices. Much of what Heron wrote and said centred on the importance of a sense of delight and optimism in paint and in particular in the effects of colour on the viewer's eye. He was content to be viewed as a decorative artist and saw no contradiction in those two positions, indeed he saw decoration as a primary function of painting. In this spirit this workshop will be playful, thrilling and full of colourful bright creations.
