STONE CARVING COURSE
This four day Stone Carving course is for beginners and those that have a little experience of stone carving. West Cornwall has been a Mecca for sculptors for many years since Barbara Hepworth moved to Cornwall to set up her workshop in St Ives, not far from Newlyn, in 1939 and she lived there until her death in 1975.
The aim of our Stone Carving course is to provide each student with the skills and creative confidence to work with stone at home.
The course is structured throughout - progressing through a series of staged approaches closely guided by your tutor, each student produces a small relief carving and a fully in-the-round sculpture. You will be developing key skills in tool use and stone handling, learning everything from efficient stone removal to fine finishing, how to achieve specific forms and shapes, detailed carving methods, texturing and creative tool use.
Centred around the key skills, your own creative interpretations are encouraged towards the completion of each sculpture.
The course is run in two parts:
Part 1 – Day 1 & 2
Introduction by your tutor - David Paton.
After a brief group session looking at the tools and stone, each student is provided with a small tablet of stone and a template to develop and complete a relief carving. This provides a gentle introduction to carving stone.
At the end of the first day we all visit the Barbara Hepworth museum in St Ives.
Part 2 – Day 2 – 4
Students complete their relief carvings.
Developing on from the skills acquired in Part 1, students are then provided with a small block of stone and guided through a series of stages towards the completion of a fully-in-the-round sculpture.
All tools and materials are provided.
Upon completion of the course each student is given advice on where and how to purchase stone and tools.
