A conversation with the figure - concept to creation

The Human Form is an exciting three-day exploratory course which uses observation as a bridge to making representations of the human form, with a wide range of potential outcomes. The human form continues to be an enduring subject for contemporary artists to this day and this course opens the doors to limitless ways of creating art works through different methods, ideas, and exercises to explore, observe, analyse and record the innate mannerisms and characteristics of the figure.

The course encourages a line of enquiry, a conversation with the subject through a series of approaches incorporating a range of poses that encompass both short and long studies. The primary purpose is to increase observation and to gather useful information about your subject, however, what you do with that information and knowledge will be personal to you and this exploration will be supported through out the course by Jason.

The materials available will be diverse and enable participants to learn how a variety of paints and mixed media materials can each bring about their own particular results or how they can bring richness, depth and visual stimuli in combination as they sit and play against each other.

The studies, through drawing, painting, memory or note taking (emotive response) can be finished works in themselves or simply information from which to build a more considered work.

During the three days we will cover basic anatomy, movement, both real and perceived through a range of poses, long and short from the head to the full figure, and, if conditions allow multi model poses.

The mornings would consist of shorter exploratory poses and exercises, and the afternoons may include longer periods of studies.

Throughout the three days we will refer to the methods of artists from the past to the present day where the figure is prominent in their work. Artists which are likely to come up in discussion might include Degas, Picasso, Bonnard, Vuillard, Giacometti, Matisse, Auerbach, Freud, Lisa Brice, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Jenna Gribbon, Marlene Dumas and Paul Rego among many others.

The course is suitable for all levels of previous experience as Jason teaches each student individually to their level as he goes around the class.
