THE REALIST LANDSCAPE PAINTING COURSE
A four day realist landscape painting course, where Jon Doran will teach students key principles to engage with when working in the landscape with oil paint. Realism has a rich history of landscape painting, from Constable to Corot, Sargent to Sorolla and numerous painters pushing it to new and exciting levels today. It’s the movement of painting that seeks to master the use of oil paint and employ it to capture not only landscape as it is seen, but in all it’s beauty too. In the pursuit of this goal, Jon and the students will study the techniques of numerous artists of the past and present and then venture out in the landscape themselves. They will focus on key painting principles such as finding a suitable and balanced compositional arrangement, capturing light and shadow relationships, tone, explore the use of a limited palette and experiment with a range of application techniques. Helpful tools such as the black mirror and the sight size method will be introduced in aiding the process of painting from life.
Cornwall lends itself to landscape painting given the wide range of atmospheric subject matter, from the rugged north coast cliffs, to quiet, secluded coves. Jon and the students will visit different locations each day and explore different approaches for tackling different subjects.
If you enjoy working in the fresh air and desire to paint the beautiful Cornish landscape as you see it, this course is for you.
