Talented textile portrait artist Elizabeth Loveday will teach participants how to create a portrait with reclaimed fabrics using hand sewing techniques such as appliqué, reverse appliqué, as well as various stitches, both painterly freehand and some more traditional. Elizabeth will also guide you in choosing your colour palette, planning out your work and show you how to add areas of colour to complement your piece using natural fabric dyes made by the artist.
Elizabeth describes her practice as 'not sitting solely within the traditional notion of “fine art”, “illustration” or “craft”, but drawing elements from all of them. To start, I make character studies and portraits using pencil drawings and paint. These guide my colour palette and theatrical narratives, allowing me to play with relationships between figures. Once planned, I use fabric of different weights, textures and ages, layering and hand stitching to transform narratives into decorative works. I think the inherent emotional connection we have with fabric brings an additional dimension of intimacy to portraiture.
