Experimental Painting Course with Dan Pyne

This exciting three day course gives artists of all levels the opportunity to explore new painting materials and methods with which they might transform their painting practice. Through a mixture of one to one tuition and demonstrations, tutor Dan Pyne will help students to push the boundaries of their practice.

The course looks closely at both surface and materials which are equally as emotional and powerful as colour can be in painting. An inventive use of materials can help artists achieve a unique voice and create works that have a profound resonance with the viewer. Works can be purely about the materials and process, or those material choices can be used to underpin a larger message. The painting surface has, through history, been a vital part of artists' work from the most realistic renaissance paintings and frescoes through to Constable, Turner and Monet and more abstract process based paintings of the 20th and 21st Century.

The primary aim of this course is to enable students to experiment with a range of materials and techniques that they may not have previously considered. A number of exciting modern and contemporary artists who incorporate texture into their painting will be discussed during the course such as George Braque, Francis Bacon, Antoni Tapies, Sandra Blow, Anselm Kiefer, Pierre Soulages, Jeremy Gardiner and Andrew Hardwick among many others.

The course will enable students to try out all sorts of techniques which they might not have previously combined with their work. Paint additives to give texture, oil based resist, intaglio mark making, dry pigment and many more exciting elements which will hugely increase the armoury of techniques used in students’ future painting practice.

All materials, supports and paint will be supplied by the art school.
