WILDNESS - ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES TO LANDSCAPE

Alternative landscape course with non-digital photography

This three-day course explores wildness and our relationship with the land using a wide range of materials, tools and processes. Oliver Raymond Barker, an experienced multimedia artist focusing on wild landscape, will guide you through the process of defining your own connections with the landscape, helping you to understand why this is important and how to embed this in your work.

The course introduces low-tech photography processes such as lumen printing, cyanotype, chemigrams and camera obscura techniques as well as artist bookmaking, listening, writing and drawing exercises. These techniques will provide you with new ways of seeing and gathering source material, enabling you to and rediscover what inspires you and broaden, complement and enrich your existing practice.

The course is divided between time spent gathering ideas and information outside in the rich, layered landscape of West Cornwall and developing work back in the studio at Newlyn.

Alongside these practical methods, Oliver will provide an insight into historical and contemporary artistic approaches to the land through talks and short film screenings.

Please note that a reasonable level of fitness is essential for this course as you may be required to walk 1-2 miles on uneven ground from the minibus drop-off points.
