Emma Purches-York
Living in the Fens, low lying fields shaped by human intervention and historically underwater; I am surrounded by flatness and rich dark earth that is past, present and future. The act of layering, scraping back and re-working oil paint and collaged material is both a mark making language and an affirmation of resilience and exploration.
Themes of loss and renewal run quietly through the work and gesturally considered passages of colour guide the experience.
I have finally started to paint the humans and animals that embody hope for me, embracing the conversation between landscape and humanity, which has never been more evident and necessary. Working with intention and reverence of process, the dialogue becomes a reciprocal relationship.
