Helen Bradbrook
I am drawn to colour, to different materials, how they feel, how they move. I like to touch the artwork as I make it, paintbrushes can sometimes feel too far removed so I allow the imperfections to exist. How pastels can be rubbed into paper or wetted with water, how watercolour can run, soak in. A hint of colour or fully saturated. Ink from oak galls, each batch varying in colour and strength, not getting hung up on recipes, correct methods, trying, riding a creative drive whilst it appears. Fragments of thought, feeling, intuition take hold. To be guided. Of moulding clay, of being able to scratch and carve once slightly hardened. Of experimenting, pastel on clay, aged, reminders of faded paint in medieval churches. Things faded, not jarring, colours not vibrating, peaceful. Keep turning, different angles, different perspectives, different views, all the contradictions. Balance, out of balance, in view, hidden. Small scale, quiet, edges seeping out, curving, gentle, building up layers, sinking back.
