Nic Fife
Nic Fife returns, again and again in her work, to the same embodied truth — that pigment and mark, in their materiality, offer a language for all that resists explanation and containment.
Through veils of translucent glaze Fife’s mark and colour explores the connectedness of all things. Her current work moves toward a raw intimacy: the language increasingly direct, and her vulnerability more willing to be seen.
For Nic, making and remaking the painted mark is a practice of returning. Gossamer veilings, together with a deeper concealment through opacity, express the half-truths of an unremembered self, a conscious honouring of the tension between the known and the forgotten.
The spiritual practice that underpins Nic Fife’s life is fundamental to her studio work; the act of painting is both an internal and external meeting place. From within a culture that increasingly mediates connection at a distance, these works invite something altogether closer: contact, presence and the quiet intelligence of touch.
