Luke Knight

Luke Knight teaches our 3-day Expressive Landscape painting course.

Luke gained a degree in fine Art at the University of Wales in Cardiff in 2003 during this time he studied at L’Ecole de Beaux Art in Nantes, and was shortlisted for the Hans Brinker Trophy Prize exhibition in Amsterdam. In 2019 Luke won first prize in the Barcelona International Gallery Awards.

'Much of the inspiration for my work comes from transitory moments rushing to get into the surf at the end of the day or early in the morning; the smell, the clarity and calm, I find when I am immersed in it. My paintings are about these experiences, about the vitality of the sea or the landscape; they are, fleeting impressions, revisited, layered, and compressed they are about remembering in paint.'

Tutor led videos accompanied by looped films from the dramatic Cornish Coastline, figure or still life to paint from.

Luke was a brilliant teacher - I especially loved his demos - the way he had them on the go and just added to them. He was excellent at giving individual attention and helping people from where they were.

Over the past few years, I have been on a course with Imogen and Maggie but felt that Luke's style and techniques would be interesting to learn and hopefully recharge my interest in learning to paint. I had an amazing 3 days. SO encouraged, learnt loads, grew in confidence and found Luke's style and input very helpful and a great balance of help but also encouragement to just keep experimenting and learning.
