BEYOND THE EDGES

BEYOND THE EDGES

We are delighted to launch this new and exciting course with Paul Lewin for 2026.

Like many landscape painters, Paul often pushes the boundaries of the rectangular format he works with. This will be the first time we have enabled Paul to teach the more experimental collage and texture-based elements of his practice.

This course will take participants to wild parts of the coastline to gather studies of different landscapes, often using collage on location and drawing studies to bring back to the studio to make more resolved paintings. The exercises incorporate materials such as coloured papers and rough found materials in combination with paint and dry materials such as ink, pastel, and oil pastel to build surfaces and break out of the traditional rectangular format of landscape painting.

The four days will be divided into time working on location gathering source materials, and studio time where we shall consolidate the information into compositions that eschew the usual restrictive straight edges.

This liberating course will help students to push how they approach depicting landscape. Working in a more intuitive way to add energy and texture alongside dynamic shapes to build composition.
