PLEIN AIR PAINTING IN OILS

This exciting new four-day course with artist Tom Hughes helps students to understand the fundamental skills of painting landscapes outdoors with oil paints. The course focuses particularly on coastal and woodland subjects around West Cornwall.

“There is no faster way to develop your skill as a painter than by working on location and capturing a scene quickly on a small board” says Tom, "I hadn’t realised how many options there are compositionally when you’re surrounded by trees… Literally every way you look there’s a painting… This was about positive and negative space. It was about tone and texture. It was new and incredibly exciting".

Suitable for beginners and improvers, students are taught largely on a one-to-one basis with experienced artist Tom Hughes, helping each individual improve their technique and overcome any obstacles that arise.

Tom will also give demonstrations during the course such as drawing up, blocking in and mixing colour. Other topics discussed or demonstrated include 'the rule of thirds’, sight size painting, starting with extremes of tone, establishing colour relationships, building planes within the painting starting with the furthest away. The tuition also includes practical advice on what to take out with you on location and  discussion of paints, mediums, supports and brushes.

The course takes place on the dramatic coastline of West Cornwall with much of the time spent outdoors whenever possible.
