Tom Hughes

New for 2026, artist Tom Hughes joins us to to tutor the exciting 4 day in-person course, Plein Air Painting with Oils.

Tom Hughes describes his style as “painterly realism.” He works on location and is concerned with capturing reality with everything that oil paint has to offer, focussing on dynamic mark-making and wielding transparent and opaque pigments to depict, light, texture and depth.

TH: “There is no faster way to develop your skill as a painter than by working on location and capturing a scene quickly on a small board. Light and weather change fast in the UK, but it can be a blessing, throwing up a myriad of different atmospheres and challenges, day after day, throughout our four distinct seasons.

I have spent thousands of hours painting from life and have explored every subject, from city streets, to Cornish coast paths and dense woodland. Each scene requires a slightly different approach and when taken together, can embolden you and see you develop as a well-rounded and confident artist.”
